On 14 Sept. 1959, the Soviet spacecraft Luna 2 crashed into the surface of the moon.  It was the first manmade object to come into contact with another celestial object.  Luna 2 was able to identify that the moon had no appreciable magnetic field, and no radiation, both unknown at the time.
